Honey’s Sweet Benefits and Recipes to Buzz About

Honey’s sweet benefits make it one of our favorite all natural sweeteners. It helps the body cure more than just a sweet tooth.

Included below are some delicious recipes featuring honey from AT AThlete, Sarah Grace and author of  Fresh Fit N Healthy.

Here are  8 reasons* why honey should be a staple in everyone’s pantry – especially as the seasons are changing it can be an immune system life saver.

  1. Antibacterial, Anti-Fungal – researchers at a university in New Zealand found “All honey is antibacterial, because the bees add an enzyme that makes hydrogen peroxide.”
  2. Reduces ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders  – Honey contains flavonoids, an antioxidant that may help ulcers and gastroenteritis.
  3. Increases athletic performance – Honey is more superior in maintaining glycogen levels and improving recovery times than any other sweeteners.
  4. Reduce cough and throat irritation –  in recents studies researchers have found that honey is as effective at soothing a cough as the leading cough suppressant, dextromethorphan.
  5. Blood sugar regulation – even though honey contains simple sugars, it is not the same as WHITE sugar or leading artificial sweeteners. The combination of fructose and glucose that honey contains actually helps to regulate blood sugar. Some honeys also are low on the hypoglycemic index.
  6. Heal wounds and burns – external application of honey has been shown to have a drying effect on wounds with the help of the simple sugars and honey’s antibacterial properties.
  7. Probiotic – many varieties of honey contain large amounts of friendly bacteria.
  8. Beautiful skin –  the anti-bacterial properties are also useful on the face but it can also be nourishing and moisturizing.

Be sure to check the Honey Locator, to find your nearest bee-keeper to find the raw honey local to your area.

Now that you know about the health benefits, let’s curb that sweet tooth with one of nature’s best sugars!
